The fjuestioji of a school in the Town of Brevard ha.s had some a<^itator.‘<, and 1 wish to enter tiie list and nialvo a lew siigf^estions. The only way to <?et such an institution is to i?o at it in a busi ness way. The building- is not to be built simply to enhance prop erty in the lo\vn or in the district wiiich might bo laid olT as a tax ing district for sucii a pur])Dse. The dollar should never bo placed above the man, neither should it be iilacod above the boys and girls, on v.’hose slioul- ders the burdens of church and state must fall, not in the dim and distant future, but, in truth and fact, are falling now. But liow’ shall we proceed*-' The County Board of Education siiould lay out a district of two miles s(iuare, or more, if in tlieir judgment it might seem best, using the court house as a cent)-e. This boundary would doubtless embrace property of the taxable value (if S;U)O.OOU. A lax of i^O cents on the iiundred dollars’ worth would each year raise ovei .s(),000. I'se at least one and ii half years of the taxes raised foi the purpose of a building and equipments, and the taxes from year lo year would keei) a splen did corj)S of at least six leacliers for ut least nine months in the j;|t*ar. Every one inside the tax ing district would get free tui tion for their boys and girls, anu the farmer who has a place worth sl'.OOU can w’ell afTord to p-ay tho small pittance of s5 each year for the tuition of all his childi-en. How many are paying s5Q, s7r>. slOO and ^150 for one child sent away to the county that luis waked up to the fact that good schools are the greatest benefac tors given lo the rising genera tion. The fellow on the outside of this taxing district who de sired to have his child or children enlt'r school could p-ay a reason able tuition here in his home county as w’ell as to send them away lo other counties where ad vantages are no better. When these things arc accom- [)lished money v» ill come into the county with young men and women who would come here to e(ji’ip themselves for life's work. Instead of this state of atfairs numbers of young men and women yearly attend schools in other counties where advantages of a higher education can be had, and there is a constant drain on the county in the way of money sent out of the county by the farmer, the business and profes Sional man to help their children secure that to which every one I is entitled in order to make him or her a better citizen—a reason ably good education. The amount of tuition received from vsources outside the taxing district would more than meet ordinary expenses for repairs, insurance, etc. I venture the assertion that there is hardly an other county in North Carolina where the advantages of a higher education are as limited as in Transylvania. All towns are pressing forward along thi.s line: surely we sliould not be totally wanting in res])0ct to one of the most important factoi-s in any com m unity. (j!o whore you will, you hear visitors asking among the first things, what kind of schools have you in \’our town? Every home- seeker inveriably asks ‘’What kind of school and how long the term do you have in Brevard," and when you take out the Indus trial School for girls, wdiat have v.’e to recommendy We are ashamed to say we have a public] school, for the fellow may ask usj to point out the building. j I repeat again, we ought not to let a few paltry dollars stand in the way of a thing that would mean more lo Brevard than any thing else at this time, a lirst class graded school, for young men jind women. It’s a small sacrifice for so great an attain ment, and the cheapest method of securing in our midst an In stitution fraught with sucii last ing and beneficial results. Think not so much of making a little money, as making of the young mon and women of your commu nity, strong, sturdy and intellect ual cili;^ens capable of tiiling the higiiest ranks in the various vo cations of life. Why not take this matter in 'land, secure a building site suit able for the purposes of a school, and one that would do for a ))er- manent location of the instituiion. It is not a debatable question, it leeds no ]ihilosophising or tine spun theories to give it wei ght in the public minds. It is a liv- ing, burninjj necesssity in this town and community. Wait not for idleness, thrift- lesness and ignorance to sap the intellectual life of the town and county, but begin to talk it. vShow the paying side of the in vestment. Let the Board of Ed ucation call a meeting of tae peo ple of the county and have the| matter laid open that ail may see | the advantages, the acres of dia monds that lie at our very doors. The best and most progressive towns of the state are the ones that have the best schools and colleges, and when we have these vve will have such a drawing card that visitors will see the advanta ges we have and will not hesitate to locate among us, our town w’ill bogin to build up and in the end it will be a project that will add much to the material growth, and far more to the moral and intel lectual growth of Brevard, yea to every portion of Transylvania county. Let others speak, let all act. Respectfully, W. G. Opinions as to Sidewalks. VOL. XI-NO. 0 How' easy the solution of all these public questions would be if the Senate was composed of magazine writers instead of law- We overheard an argument bo I tw’een two citizens of Brevard a i yers few days since which p.t us to I insist that they wero mvesngat.ng. One «>nten<led ! that the terms of the bond issue *. ..i ^ „ was not able to scare them to the prevented the use of the>5<,D00i , ' ' point of reducing prices on sir- for sidewalks on any but the |, . streets named in the order of election. The other contended that the money could be used on any street in tou-'n—even to open ing new streets. We immediate iy referred to our tiles in order to learn the w’ording af the order of election, and here it is; The said -S:’.*),000 to be expend ed as follows, to wit: .sll,il50 for the purchase, improvement and extension of the waterworks; for the purchase, improve ment and extension of the sewer system: si!.500 foi- grading Main, Bi’oad, Poor, Caldwell, Whitmirt*. Depot and other streets; $7,500 lo be expended in grading and improving the sidewalks on above named streets in said tow’ti. As w’e see it therc^ is nothing in this to prevent ttie use of the money in building sidewalKs and oi)ening and improving streeis my where in town. We very se riously doubt wliether a,ny oi this money could be divert d t'» payin;^ damages in order to \vi den streets, blit for o{)oninir n<-n streeis where all riirhts are triv en to th<? lown we see nKrhinj- i the l-anguage of the order of eler lion to [)revent.
